Removing Rear Axle Shafts

The other day when I was giving my Jeep a one time over, I noticed some drip markings coming off of my tires. Upon further investigation I noticed I had a bad axle seal on my drivers side.

This write upward will be skilful if you are planning on replacing your rear axle shafts or demand to install new bearings/seals.

You will need the following office numbers to supervene upon your seals and bearings. You will need 1 of each of the post-obit parts per shaft.

Beam Begetting Retaining Ring: 83503077-M
Wheel Begetting: 83503064-M
Axle Drive Shaft Seal: 68003270AA

According to the Jeep Factory Service Transmission they also advise that you replace the following items:
Axle Seal Retainer: 68008523AA-M
Retainer Plate Nut: 68003275AA-M

You will need i Axle Seal Servant per axle shaft and 4 Backing Plate Nuts per shaft.

I would recommend at least replacing the retainer, as it tin can go warped with the pressing on and off of new bearings and seals.

1. Using a floor jack; jack upwardly the commuter side. This will allow the gear oil to drain from the beam tube. (So you don't take to do a gear oil change at the same fourth dimension.).
2. Using the advisable sized socket and ratchet remove the lug-nuts and tire.
three. Next, remove the 2 brake caliper bolts using an 18mm socket and ratchet.

4. Afterward removing the caliper bolts, remove the restriction caliper from the rotor and hang it out of the way using naught ties.
v. Remove the rotor. Be sure not to touch the rotor surface where the brake pad meets the rotor.
6. Using an 8mm socket removing the bolt belongings the ABS sensor in place. This needs to exist loose for the beam shaft to be able to pass by the sensor.

seven. Adjacent using an 18mm socket and ratchet remove the four retainer plate nuts. Ii are located in the front of the axle and two in the rear.

8. Using a small pry bar carefully nudge the axle shaft loose. It should slide directly out!

You will need a store press to remove and install the new bearings and seals. If you lot don't accept a shop press some local shops volition do it for your for a nominal charge.

Be sure to check your axle shaft for whatsoever damage.

To re-install the axle shaft:
1. Slide the axle shaft back into the axle housing making sure the splines mate up.
ii. Using the new retainer bolts, apply some blueish loctite and reinstall them. Tightening them to 45lbs of torque.
iii. Reinstall the ABS sensor bolt.
4. Identify the rotor back in identify.
five. Slide the brake caliper back on. Apply some bluish loctite to the caliper bolts and torque to 75lbs.
6. Reinstall the wheel/tire and tighten the lug-nuts to the appropriate level. (85-125lbs of torque usually).
7. Lower the jeep and remove any floor jacks and jack stands.
8. Bank check your rear differential oil level. You may demand to add some boosted oil.
9. Recheck your torque settings once everything is back on the footing. Re-check the torque settings again at 500 miles.
